Chester Walls in the fog (2024)

Chester is renowned for its splendid medieval city walls, which stand as a prominent tourist attraction.  Constructed by the Romans around 2,000 years ago, the Chester City Wall holds the distinction of being England's oldest, longest, and most intact historic defensive structure.

Captured on a chilly December evening in 2010, this image showcases Chester's walls shrouded in a thick, eerie fog.  The atmosphere of that night resembled scenes from the Sherlock Holmes novel "The Hound of the Baskervilles."

It's worth noting that, although this image was taken back to 2010, advanced digital imaging technology tools from 2024 have been employed to reprocess the image, ensuring the highest quality print.

Red Boat on River Dee, Hoar Frost

The River Dee spans a length of 70 miles, coursing through Chester.  This photograph captures the scenery from Handbridge on the river's south side, near Edgar's Field.

The evening prior to the picture being taken featured extremely cold and humid conditions, ideal for the formation of hoar frost visible on the trees.  This distinctive feathery frost develops when airborne water vapor encounters surfaces already below freezing, causing frozen ice crystals to grow.

Eastgate Clock, Chester (Landscape)

Situated on Eastgate Street along the ancient Roman walls of Chester, the renowned Eastgate Clock stands as a symbol of historical significance.  Commissioned in honour of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, the clock was skilfully designed by Chester Architect John Douglas.  Its timekeeping journey began on May 24, 1899, with the initial illumination of its four dials using gas lighting.  Over time, the clock has undergone modernization, transitioning to electric lights and incorporating a computerized system for precise timekeeping.

Undoubtedly, the Eastgate Clock stands out as Chester's most prominent landmark, recognized as the second most photographed clock in England.  In 1955, both the clock and gateway were honoured with Grade I listing as a testament to their historical and architectural significance.

An intriguing aspect of the clock is its original mechanism, crafted and installed by JB Joyce in 1899.  Notably, JB Joyce is now a part of the Smith of Derby group, responsible for the ongoing service and maintenance of this iconic timepiece.

The Groves & Old Dee Bridge in the Snow

The River Dee, spanning 70 miles in length, traverses through Chester.  The photograph captures the Groves area of the river, situated just down the hill from the Roman Amphitheatre.

Established in the 1700s, The Groves stands as a riverside promenade extending from Grosvenor Park to the Old Handbridge area of Chester.  In 1726, a row of trees was planted, transforming it into a trendy promenade.  Today, The Groves is a favoured spot for indulging in an ice cream from distinctive red huts (seen to the right in the photo) or embarking on a leisurely boat trip down the river.

Chester's oldest bridge, The Old Dee Bridge, constructed from red sandstone, is believed to date back to around 1357.  With seven arches, the two northernmost ones once spanned the leat leading to the now-demolished old Dee Mills.

Upper Bridge Street from the Rows

Captured from the western side of Upper Bridge Street Rows, the view extends down Eastgate.  The Rows, distinctive to Chester and with origins tracing back to medieval times, feature a seamless half-timbered gallery that creates a secondary row of shops above the street-level ones.  The charm and architectural allure of Chester undeniably owe much to the facades in this locale.  While some structures are Victorian reproductions, a few authentic 13th-century buildings have endured through time.

Upper Bridge Street Fisheye (Black and White)

Departing from the conventional perspective of Chester, this ground-level fisheye capture provides a unique vantage point near the cobblestone street in the vicinity of an area known as The Cross.  These ancient cobblestone streets bear witness to the historical footsteps of Roman Legionnaires heading to war, Viking raiders causing chaos, and Norman invaders triumphing over the Anglo Saxons.  The charm and distinctive character of Chester owe much to the architectural facades in this particular locale.  While some are Victorian replicas, a few authentic 13th-century structures have managed to endure the test of time.

Chester Walls near Kaleyard Gate

The famed medieval city walls in Chester stand as one of the city's most renowned tourist attractions.  Constructed around 2,000 years ago by the Romans, the Chester City Wall holds the distinction of being the oldest, longest, and most complete historic defensive structure in England.

Adjacent to the rear of Chester Cathedral lies a segment of the walls featuring a postern gate, a secondary entrance.  In the 13th century, monks from St Werburgh's Abbey established a vegetable garden, also known as a "kaleyard" outside the city walls, now repurposed as a car park.  In 1275, seeking easier access to their crops, the monks sought permission from Edward I, also known as Edward Longshanks, to cut a gate through the wall.  Edward granted approval with certain conditions, including the requirement that the gate be securely locked at nightfall.
